Southwest Florida is a popular relocation destination, and two of its most attractive cities are Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Both cities are great options that highlight all of what Southwest Florida is known for, but some unique differences may make one the better fit for you. Here’s a comparison to help you decide which city is the right fit for you.

Community 

Fort Myers blends historic charm with modern conveniences. Its downtown area features a lively mix of shops, galleries, restaurants, and cultural venues. Cape Coral offers a more suburban and laid-back vibe. Known for its grid of canals and waterfront living, the city feels a little quieter and more spread out.

Outdoor & Water Activities

Fort Myers is located along the Caloosahatchee River and close to the Gulf of Mexico, which offers excellent access to boating, fishing, and beach days. It is a closer drive to Southwest Florida’s beaches, including Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island.

Cape Coral is a little further drive to the beaches, but includes over 400 miles of navigable canals. This makes it perfect for boating, kayaking, and fishing right from your backyard. Many homes come with private docks, a major perk for water enthusiasts.

While the dining and entertainment scene is growing, it’s more spread out throughout the city with less options than in Fort Myers.

Traffic & Commute

Fort Myers generally sees more traffic congestion than Cape Coral. However, Fort Myers offers abundant job opportunities, so many Cape Coral residents must cross one of the bridges each day to commute to work there. During rush hours, the bridges can get congested.

Secondary Education

Fort Myers hosts several higher education options, including Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida SouthWestern State College, Fort Myers Technical College, Keiser University, and Rasmussen University. If closer accessibility to these institutions is important, then Fort Myers may be a better fit for you.
