When people picture a home in Southwest Florida, a pool is often part of the dream. A pool can make a home feel like a getaway. In Southwest Florida you can enjoy a pool all year, whether you like to swim, relax by the water, or host family when they visit. However, when you’re buying a home, is a private pool worth it? The answer depends on how you’ll use it and what you’re comfortable spending to maintain it. 

What Does It Cost to Own One? 

The purchase price is only part of the equation. Pools need regular cleaning and chemical care, and the pump uses electricity. Depending on the setup, you may also have costs for heating, a screen enclosure, or future equipment repairs. Before making an offer, ask about the age and condition of the pump, heater, pool surface, and enclosure. Get an insurance quote for the specific property and consider a pool inspection to get a clearer picture of potential repairs. If you will want a company to come weekly to maintain the pool, you can expect costs to be from about $75 to $130 per month depending on your pool and the company you hire. 

Think About How You’ll Actually Live 

A private pool sounds wonderful, but be honest about your routine. Will you swim several times a week, or are you more likely to enjoy looking at it from the lanai? Are you comfortable keeping up with maintenance, or will you hire a pool service? 

If you travel often or only want an occasional swim, a neighborhood with a community pool might give you what you want with less day-to-day responsibility. On the other hand, if privacy and the ability to step outside for a swim matter to you, a community pool may not feel like enough. 

Will a Pool Help at Resale? 

A pool can attract future buyers, especially when it’s well maintained and fits the home and neighborhood. But it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll recover every dollar spent on it. Some buyers actively want a pool; others prefer a home without the upkeep. That’s why you should evaluate resale value against comparable homes in the same area.
