How to Decide Whether to Repair or Replace Your Appliances

As a homeowner, you will likely face the dilemma at some point of whether to repair or replace an appliance in your home. It's not a fun problem to be faced with, but Florida Realtors® recently published an article* to help homeowners facing this question. Here are some things to consider from the article:
- "Try a low-cost fix". Start by checking the owner's manual. If you can't find the hard copy, you can likely find a digital copy online or contact customer service. Also, search your issue on YouTube or Google and you will likely see a video addressing your problem, a Reddit article, or message boards with other tips and tricks. If it's a low-cost fix, then you may have your answer.
- Check for a warranty. Depending on when you purchased the appliance, it might still be covered under warranty. Check your receipt and original paperwork.
- "Do the math". Do some research on the expected life span of your appliance compared to how old it is. Comparing the appliance's age with the expected life span and the cost to repair vs. replace, will likely give you your answer.
- "Decide how much you like the appliance." If it's a favorite appliance, it works well still outside of the issue, or it is a custom appliance, it may be worth repairing.
- Check with an expert. Check with a professional if the repair involves items such as electronics, gas lines, or other potential safety hazards. Also, be careful not to do anything that may void the warranty, such as taking apart an appliance in some cases.
- Consider the price. Check for sales and coupons, and try a cost comparison tool to see how much a new appliance is.
- Regular Maintenance. Don't forget that regular maintenance and cleaning help prolong the life of your appliance.
