Hiring a Cross-Country Mover

Finding and hiring a cross-country mover is a big decision that requires thorough research and planning to find a reputable moving company. It can also be a significant investment not only due to the costs of the company, but also considering all of your assets that will be moved. Here are some things that you need to know to ensure a smooth move, with your belongings safely delivered, and without you getting scammed in the process.
- FMCSA Registered. First, consumers should know that the federal government regulates interstate movers. Interstate movers must be registered with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and have a U.S. DOT number. Your first step should be to confirm that the moving company is registered with the FMSA, has a U.S. DOT number, and is authorized to perform a household goods move. You can search for a registered mover here: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move .
- Research. Ensure you conduct thorough research on the company. Check Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, and Better Business Bureau to see reviews and check their reputation. You can also ask for referrals from your real estate agent, friends, or coworkers.
- Quotes. You should get at least three estimates from movers to compare the prices and services. Be wary of a very low quote that could have hidden fees. Ensure that you understand your cost breakdown and any factors that may affect the cost.
- Your Rights. Request the booklet, Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move, from the mover. This booklet can also be found here: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmcsa.dot.gov/files/RightsandResponsibilitiesBooklet_2022Update.pdf
- Contract. Understand your contract. What is the mover's responsibility for damages to your belongings? How are disputes settled? What are the terms of liability/insurance and cancellation/refund policies?
- Insurance. Consider whether you want to obtain insurance for your belongings, and know your insurance options.
- Moving Day. On moving day, stay with the movers as they inventory your items. Carefully read all documents before signing and resolve any questions or concerns about the condition of your items. Ensure that nothing was left behind and keep the bill of lading until charges are paid, items are delivered, and all claims are settled.
- Delivery Day. Be at your new home to answer questions and supervise the delivery of your items. Note all damaged or missing items on the inventory list.
